The Tuk Tuk Tour

We have a morning departure by tuk tuk to visit Angkor Thom, the former Imperial Capital of Jayavarman VII and the Angkorian Empire. The explorations begin the Terrace of the Leper King and the Terrace of Elephants where Khmer Kings held Royal processions and ceremonies.

Continue to the south portal with the famous Bayon, the enigmatic and enchanting temple of 54 gigantic towers decorated with 216 faces.  Then, on to visit Ta Prohm, the famous Tomb Raider temple surrounded by jungle.

The afternoon is spent exploring the marvellous temple of Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 12th century in honour of Vishnu.  Finish your day admiring the beautiful sunset over Angkor Wat and the surrounding area from the Mount Bakheng.

Two Banteays and a Boat on the Moat.

Banteay Srei is known as the ‘Citadel of Women’. It is constructed of pink sandstone and decorated with beautiful stone carvings. It is probably the most beautiful of all the temples, and the only one not built by Royalty.

Then you visit Banteay Samre and afterwards, finish your day perfectly with a peaceful boat ride on the moat of Angkor. You can marvel at the engineering of the ancient Khmer water systems, relaxing and accompanied by the sound of bird song as the sun goes down.

We travel across ancient reservoirs (long since devoid of water), through pretty villages and rice paddies, to visit the fine riverbed carvings of Kbal Spean and perhaps have a swim at the base of the stunning waterfall.

You will then go to Banteay Srei temple, a small pink sandstone temple with the most exquisite, deep and complex carvings. It is probably the most beautiful of all the temples and the only one not built by Royalty.  On the way back we have a final stop at the interesting temple of Banteay Samre (built by Suryavarman II).

Rolous Group

The Rolous Group Temples are what remains of the second Angkorian capital, Hariharalaya, near the contemporary town of Rolous. The two most important temples in the Rolous group are Preah Ko and the very picturesque Bakong. There are four temples to explore here and they demonstrate the changing styles of architecture, from the brick temples of the earlier Chenla Empire style to the classic Khmer Empire style of laterite topped with sandstone.

After your explorations, you will visit the Angkor National Museum. The Museum beautiful galleries include multi-media and are a visual feast as well as providing an abundance of information on the Khmer Empire.

Stilt Houses and a Mysterious Temple

Kampong Khleang, on the northern edge of Tonle Sap Lake, is a town of stilted houses built 10-12 m off the ground. It is a permanent community within the floodplain of the lake, with an economy based on fishing, and surrounded by flooded forest.  You arrive by local boat through the stilt houses then go out to the vast expanse of Tonle Sap to witness this fascinating.

After midday, drive on to Beng Mealea, a mysterious temple still overgrown by the jungle, perfect afternoon for a photography. The movie “Two Brothers” about twin tiger cubs was beautifully filmed here.

Jungle Explorer

Koh Ker is a remote, seldom visited former city and its temple complex built between 928 and 944 under King Jayavarman IV, and his son, Harshavarman II.  This complex has many unique temples, although dominated by Prasat Thom, a pyramid, with striking similarities to the Mayan temples.

Other unique temples include Prasat Krahom (Red Temple), Prasat Thneng, one of the largest Shiva lingas in Cambodia, and Prasat Pram crowned with trees.

On the way back we stop to explore the extremity of the mountain ranges to mysterious Beng Mealea, a blueprint for Angkor Wat and featured in the movie, Two Brothers.

Floating Village and Silk Farm

The Sacred Mountain

Phnom Kulen is a sacred mountain to the Khmer. It was here in 802 AD that the Angkorian Empire was founded. The river has been carved with sacred Linga and Yoni which makes the water fertile before it plunges over waterfalls to water the plain of Angkor.

Depending on the season, you can swim in the rockpools at the base of the waterfall. There is an enormous reclining Buddha which is much revered by the Khmer, in the village. There are plenty of picnic huts along the river with hammocks where you can relax and have a short nap.

Banteay Chhmar

Banteay Chhmar is a 3 hour drive and along the way you will pass through beautiful countryside and rural villages. We turn off the highway at Sisaphon, a town that has modern conveniences but is untouched by foreign influences, which makes it an interesting representation of modern Cambodia. The Temple complex consists of the stunning Banteay Chhmar and another nine satellite temples. Eight of these temples are laid out with two each in the four cardinal directions, indicating a sacred landscape. There are two Barays, (water reservoirs) one is ancient, but the other, the Pol Pot Baray was built under horrendous conditions and is now the water supply for the village.

Preah Vihear

This is a full day out with an early start, Preah Vihear is on the Thai border and only 10kms form the Laos border. This enormous temple is perched on a huge cliff and you can see into both countries. The drive north through beautiful rural Cambodia also includes driving through the Kulen Prum Tep Wildlife Sanctuary.

When you get to the mountain you will notice bunker systems being used as homes. They are a relic of the border dispute over the temple and its grounds which did not end until 2013 when the UN declared it to be Cambodian territory.
